I've noticed that with the publication of the books, and the increasing use of cellphones, many more people are showing up in TPM's Paleo Approach Community. And (I'm exaggerating) NONE OF THEM READ THE PINNED POST OR USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION and I've lost my patience with it. In my crankiness I'm imagining what an excellent strategy that is to get me to go out of my way and come here. Is there any way to make sure new group members have read the pinned post and are aware that the Search function is useful for finding what one is looking for? Or perhaps I just need to eat breakfast? (/rant)

It's become kind of a dumping ground for any question people want to ask. What irks me are the posts with misleading information, not to mention the fact that people feel entitled to express their opinion whether it fits with the group's purpose. I get that as we heal, we add in more foods so this group has more flexibility than others. But, it would be great if the moderators exercised more discipline with the group.

And by "it" I mean the Facebook page.

I feel you, saraburns. That's why I gave up on it and came here instead So much more organization of information. I don't know why people don't use this forum much. And you have to remember that even if people do use the search function on FB, it kind of sucks. So finding things is ridiculously hard. But I remember when I was active in the group all I had to do was Google most peoples' questions to find the answers or relevant blog posts...not sure why they couldn't do it themselves!

People will go where they already go, and where there's a lot of "there" there. I don't like or use a cellphone (except when I'm traveling and need to), but most normal people do, so the FB page is going to continue to be accessed via cellphone, which, apparently, doesn't show the Search Functionality. Combine that with the instant gratification expected from a cellphone app, and there is an ever-growing user base that lacks the commitment or patience to read the pinned post or do a search before posting. Subtract moderation which deletes posts that violate the stated guidelines of the group and we have multiple posts on liquid detox diets, woohoo medical advice for alarming symptoms and complaints about being confronted by ingredients that trigger peoples' unhappiness. I can see the reason for creating this "community" - it helps build the brand and provides more privacy than a FB group, and certainly more confidentiality than a blogpost comment, but it also doesn't offer much beyond that. Until someone wants to figure out how,to drive more traffic here, I'll just enjoy being one of the few kids in this groovy swimming pool of like-minded people. Thanks for being here!

I wondered why there was such little traffic here. I just joined last week and didn't even KNOW there was a FB group. So I'll refrain from asking questions there if you guys promise you will be diligent to answer my questions here, ok? hee hee

I just saw a promo about this place in FB, so let's see if we get a bump. If they read this thread, they'll probably say "oh, I was wondering where that 'read the pinned post and use the search' cranky person went! : )

Hi everyone! Yes, we are aware of the issues with the FB group. Sara is right, people don't search pasts posts, don't look at the pinned post, etc. Since the group shows up in search results if someone searches Facebook for "The Paleo" many people join. Sometimes hundreds of people in one day. And many of those people don't know that "The Paleo Approach" refers to the AIP, they don't know about The Paleo Mom, etc. The group is so large and has so many messages that it is very hard to moderate it very much at all. People can "report posts" to moderators and that way it is flagged for us to see. I love our site here and I also don't know why it is not more active. I think because people already go to FB everyday it's very convenient to use a group there. But I like that this site is divided into categories, you can easily see past posts, etc. I think many people have found great information, feedback, and support on this site. I appreciate you all being here, and a big thank you to the awesome moderators on this site.

Today has been rather interesting on the FB group! LOL!
Would it be appropriate to make it a prerequisite of sorts to have purchased Sarah's book, since that is what we are trying to follow? If we have to be "approved," what is the basis on which we are approved? Would approving the posts be easier? That way you could reject the ones that don't apply?
Just throwing out some options. Feel free to totally ignore me because I'm pretty ignorant as to how the groups work.

Or better yet, close down the FB group, with a warning of a couple weeks, and send everyone here where there are more moderators?

Beth, those are all good ideas in theory. However, with many people (usually fifty or more) people requesting to join the FB group daily, it would take a lot of time for a moderator to screen each request. It's also difficult to do any type of screening because if you send a message to someone on FB and that person is not your "friend", the message goes to their "other" folder and they may not see it. Same with approving each post, the group has many, many posts each day and that would take a lot of time from a moderator to look at each post.
The FB group has over 28,000 members, and with that many people it can be difficult to manage.

Are the moderators active in the Facebook group? The conversations/posts get so outrageous. This board is a good alternative, but ironically, it is intended to be broader and more flexible. Plus, I tend to participate less because it isn't quite as private.

The question of traffic to this site vs the FB page is an interesting one. I've been reading The Paleo Mom's blog for a year now, am subscribed to her newsletter, purchased The Paleo Approach in February, and the cookbook a few weeks ago, and it was only through today's giveaway that I realized there was actually this separate Paleo Mom Community site. I wish I'd seen it last year!
