A year ago I did AI paleo until the holiday season. I lost weight, and all my osteoarthritis pain went away. Of course, even the best of health routines can't reverse severe damage, so after seeking a 4th opinion I had a hip replacement 3 weeks ago. After Christmas I didn't follow paleo perfectly and slowly the pain returned but not at the lever it had been. Now that I have had surgery, I have no pain and feel fantastic, no limp or structural barriers (I had bone on bone arthritis and spurs that prevented normal walking). I am thrilled with the results, but was surprised I couldn't resume weight bearing at the usual time for this protocol. I called the nurse and she said I had "soft bones" so the adhering of the prosthesis to my femur, etc. will take longer.
Okay, I'm not sure if "soft bones" means osteoporosis or other bone disorders (osteomalacia, lack of vitamin D), but I am determined to build up my bones and return to better health. I have not been doing enough weight bearing exercise the last couple of years do to OI pain, and can't fully resume weight bearing for a while. So, I am going to make some marrow bone broth. I can't take supplements until I'm off my meds in one week (coumidan, which you can't mess with-seems like everything causes blood clotting so my levels are low).
I am open for all ideas. I do plan to get busy with probiotics but have never eaten fermented foods for the gut. I live close to Canada (north of Seattle) so sunshine is rare, although this summer has been great.
Also, if you have ideas to what would cause this problem other than not getting enough exercise, I keep wondering what I could have done to change all this. When on AI Paleo I eat a big breakfast, small lunch and then have an "after work snack" and dinner, don't eat after dinner. Sometimes I think I don't eat enough during the 8 hour work day, but I really don't have time or appreciate a big meal when I'm working, so like to save the "good food" for when I get home.
All ideas appreciated!!
