Hi. I'm new to this whole paleo thing.
However, It's something I definitely want to do and am going to try to do as much as I can... Its something I've been thinking about doing a couple of years, but never really started trying to actively do until my allergy doctor suggested it.
I have a ton of allergies... some are more intolerances than full blown allergies, but many are full blown allergies that I just didn't know about. I knew a few like cats and ragweed for many years but was not aware of the intolerances until I started talking with docs and doing the tests.
I was doing allergy drops a few years back, but lost my old job, and the insurance that covered them... so now am going in to doing allergy shots starting in a couple of days. I've been fighting weight for a few years now, but not as actively as I should have been... When I was first diagnosed with diabetes I got on the healthy wagon heavy duty and was doing all sorts of workouts... then slowly started going back to old bad habbits, and fluctuated in weight a bit, hitting various plateaus, and weight gains because of emotional eating or just giving up on trying to get healthy... but now that I'm a father, it's about time I get healthy so my child can know her dad for many years to come...
I'm probably going to mainly try to do the Paleo Approach in combination with the No S diet as much as possible as they seem to go together mostly... but I'm going to try to not make the S days be too often, and still stay on Paleo on those days mostly... just maybe give myself a little leeway on those special days as pushing too hard on diet and exercise I've found can push you backwards from your goals instead of propelling you forward if you don't give yourself a break now and then... Most of my food allergy intolerances such as wheat, corn, soy, and chicken are things that I've eaten most of my life.... so if someone has a birthday or something, I'll probably eat some cake... but try not to make that happen on a daily routine... I figure if I can do at least 6 days a week on pure paleo and following No S diet, I can give myself a little break from time to time, so long as I don't go overboard... and make sure that if I do go off the diet a little that I climb right back on at the next meal.
The only thing that sort of concerns me about the paleo diet lifestyle is getting enough carbs... I'm diabetic and most diabetic literature and specialists that I've spoken with indicate that for someone my age, sex, etc, that I should be eating 45-55 grams of carbs per meal... If I eat one piece of fruit, some veggies, and some small bit of meat.... something like a banana, celery, and a thin slice or two of deli ham like I did the other day, I'm afraid it may not be enough to get there since I think bananas have around 30 carbs based on what I've read... the meat protein should help those carbs slow burn, but it's still not quite 55 carbs? Substitute the celery with carrots and maybe...?
One thing the allergy doc recommended is trying to eat something different every day of the week as much as possible since folks like me with lots of allergies don't want to build up new allergies by eating the same thing over and over and over again. I suspect that may lead to a more pricey grocery bill, but it sounds logical if the eating the same thing over and over is what caused the allergies that I already have to come in to existence in the first place?... Anyone else here follow this type of logic and/or have any other advice?
