Hi,
I have a query about breathing and haven't been able to find any direct references to it on paleomom. I think it's an important piece of the puzzle, certainly for me. I'm hoping that Sarah, with her science background, can shed some light on this.
As well as adopting the Paleo Approach (I have Hashimoto's), I have recently been going to breathing re-training. I have chronic nasal congestion and have been working to improve my breathing since I did a Buteyko course 10 years ago, but have discovered that my breathing is still dysfunctional.
Like many people, I over-breathe, and our CO2 set points (the CO2 concentration in our lungs that stimulates our breathing impulse) are lower than the optimal level of 40 mmHg. This is caused by stress of various kinds (and by chronic nasal congestion). So, with a low circulating CO2 concentration, we don't get adequate oxygen delivered to our tissues (the Bohr effect on haemoglobin) and also our blood is more alkaline than is optimal.
The health problems that many of us suffer (leaky gut, inflammation etc) probably contribute to over-breathing, and while the healing that comes with the Paleo Approach should help to alleviate some of these factors, breathing is also a habit, and re-training may be necessary to change it. I'm also assuming that the physiological effects of over-breathing, especially high blood pH, probably interact with the immune system (and other systems) in multiple ways, so poor breathing could effect our diseases and our healing.
So, might functional breathing be an important factor, at least for some people, on their road to recovery? Is breathing another important lifestyle factor that we should consider as part of the Paleo Approach?
Thanks,
Wendy
