Hi,
I am the mom of three wonderful kids. My oldest son, who is 10, was diagnosed with celiac when he was 3, and he has been gluten free ever since. Although the diet seemed to improve his health quite a bit, over the past few years, we started seeing some symptoms creeping back. It got to the point that I started wondering if he had developed another autoimmune disease. I asked our local celiac support group for ideas, and someone posted an article from paleomom.com about gluten cross reactors, and we've been on this journey to figuring things out for the past few months. We took him off of dairy this past September, which did help him to have more than 1-2 bowel movements a week, but it didn't help with his insomnia, brain fog, and fatigue. His pediatrician was not helpful... she wanted to put him on melatonin and miralax. There was no effort to get to the root of the problem, which was very frustrating to me!
Through the autoimmune summit by Dr. Amy Myers, I learned about functional medicine for the first time, and set out to find an IFM doctor near us. My son was evaluated and had several tests run. He has leaky gut, yeast overgrowth, low cholesterol, and poor mitochondrial function. We also found out that he is homozygous C677 for the MTHFR gene mutation. His doctor wants us to clean up his diet and give him several different supplements, including 2000 MCG of l-methylfolate. After reading more about MTHFR online, we are concerned this may be too high of a dose. I'm wondering what others who know about this think?
As far as cleaning up his diet, I'm leaning toward the paleo approach, but I don't know where to even begin. It is so different from the way I'm used to cooking. How can I ease into this?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
Sherrie

Hi Sherrie! There is actually a SAD to AIP in SIX program you could look into, it helps you ease into the autoimmune protocol with guidance and support in a small group setting. autoimmune-paleo.com/groupcoaching
