It seems every week I read a new article about some new $60 supplement I must absolutely take, and the list of things I'd like to improve on w/ my personal generates so many supplement recommendations. So my question is, what staple supplements should I start with?
Right now I take a women's multivitamin, fish oil/omegas, vitamin D & probiotics.
Being that I have hashimottos, inflammation flare ups, fatigue, poor concentration, would like to loose some weight, muscle aches, pms..... there are multiple supplements advertised or recommended constantly.
The other question that I know I should really be asking first, are what nutrients from food should I really strive to get everyday? I'm a person of habit, some good, many bad. If I know I should eat a green apple every day, I will, so advice like that is really helpful. While I strive to make a green juice daily, or eat more vegetables, it doesn't always happen. A bare minimum "must eat everyday" to get me started on a routine is a doable way for me to start making those important changes, because the lists of how to be healthier get quite overwhelming, so I'm really trying to start with one habit at a time. Please send me your down and dirty, must-do-this-start-here advice!
Thanks! Rachel/goinggruene

Check out Terry Whals, MD. She halted & reversed her MS with diet & supplementation. Her recommendations are similar to Sarah's. In my opinion the "one" habit to start is to eat 3 cups of greens with every meal.
Dr Whals recommends 6 cups if you're small and 9 cups if you're a large person / day which is a lot. It took a while to get used to breakfast being meat with a spinach salad, but now it seems normal. I'm still not up to 6 cups but probable get 4-5. Costco has a bag of baby kale, collards, etc for $4.99 which is great!
Also look into your thyroid medication. If you're on synthroid (which is only T4) you may need to switch to Armour or Nature-throid which has T3 & T4. Some people can't convert the T4 into T3 which is what your cells need for energy.

That's good advice. I bought a refurbished vitamix a while back and sometimes juice veggies with a green apple and blueberries from the freezer. Drinking 4 cups of greens a day is pretty doable, I'm not the best chewer! Takes so much time haha. I'm on the natruethroid train for sure. I noticed a big difference switching over from synthroid and cytomel.
Since her book is for MS, do you still find it applicable since you too have hashimottos?

Its sounds like you're on the right path. It's finding out what works best for you. It's so easy to go overboard. I take a good multivitamin, Vitamin D (make sure your blood levels stay between 60-80, fish oil and probiotics too. I also take Moducare which is an immune modulator, NAC(precursor to glutathione)and glutamine for my gut. I won't stay on all this stuff forever. I do have Hashimoto's - I was diagnosed in June 2014. It took a good 6 months to start feeling normal. I to still have some bad day, and I really think its related to what I eat.Have you been tested for food sensitivities? I have many and I'm still working on fixing my "leaky gut" since that most likely was the trigger for my Hashimoto's.
Terry Whals does target MS specifically but the principles are pretty much the same for autoimmune disorders - she does a good job on diet requirements.
Actually, the first book I got was "The Root Cause" by Isabella Wentz is written specifically for Hashimotos's. She also has a website thyroidlifestyle.com. She covers everything related to Hashimotos. I highly recommend it. There's tons free information on the web. Also check out Andrea Nakayama's web site ReplenishPDX.com. Her site has a class "Girls Guide to Hashimoto's which I'm going to look into.
Juicing your greens is great. I too have a vitamix and drink my greens a few time a week.
Stay Healthy! Rose
