Hello, I am a homeschooling mom of five who has recently embarked on a food production adventure in order to heal my children. My 15-year-old has dealt with EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified), OCD, anxiety and chronic digestive issues. Her pediatric GI was of absolutely no help other than to perform invasive tests to rule out structural problems in the gut. My 9-year-old was diagnosed with a tic disorder a few months ago and his story is a miracle! We forced him (it was very hard!) to go almost completely paleo cold turkey and within 4 days his tics went from outrageous and all-encompassing to nearly unnoticeable! Within a couple weeks we were able to wean him from his medication. It was in order to support him that we were inspired to change our diet as a whole family. My 6-year-old has a rare auto-immune disorder called Landau-Kleffner which basically means when diagnosed about 3 years ago she was having small seizures every 2 minutes and had regressed to a near infantile state. Her pediatric neurologist brought her back to us with drugs but I am hopeful that we can get her off them someday. Since going paleo my 13-year-old, who has always been underweight has an increased appetite, is going through a growth spurt, and feels so much better she is embracing the diet for herself. My 11-year-old is not totally on board, but even he is enjoying healthier foods and cannot deny how it has helped his brother! Going through this has increased my distrust of conventional medicine and inspired me to prioritize how we eat in order to let food be our medicine.

Dear BlessedbySeven, You really have your hands full! Congratulations on your successes! I had much success with my son's health problems addressing diet, and it seemed to completely "cure" his problems. This was when he was 2 years old, and a homeopath put him on a grain-free diet (very much like paleo, but he could have goat dairy), and his respiratory and behavioral problems went away. I thought he was autism spectrum at the time (very volatile and rigid). He's 15 now and I would like to get my teens on paleo, but that would be a battle. They do have paleo dinners every night (whether they know it or not!) Regarding your child who has seizures, although I wouldn't mess with meds without your doctors help, many of the children I used to work with (I'm a pediatric therapist and worked primarily with neurologically involved children)were sometimes put on a ketogenic diet. This was a diet high in fat and it worked wonders for many children. I can see how paleo could be similar, although I think these children were given cream and butter, but coconut oil and other high fat foods would do the same. Best wishes! Teresa
