I've always had a sensitivity to capsaicin, and in the past few months have noticed that I get a tummy ache after eating potatoes. But I've never noticed a problem with tomatoes. Is this odd or not unheard of?

From what I understand, it's not uncommon for a person to have different reactions to different nightshades. When I first discovered my (quite severe) pepper sensitivity, I eliminated all nightshades for a time and then reintroduced different ones. With peppers, I was sick for a week or more. With potatoes, I didn't notice a thing. Now that I'm AIP, I'm back to life without any nightshades again

I have the same reaction, but different severity with different nightshades. I get a stomach ache followed by voiding of the bowels. About 2 hours later I get joint pain that can last up to 2 days. Eggplants are worst, followed by potatoes, tomatoes and I am not sure about capsicum (sweet peppers) as I haven't had a slip with it since I started avoiding them, but I need to eat a fair bit of chilli before I get any issues, like a bowl of laksa soup, or a serve of Malay or Thai curry. I can happily have a few shakes of chili flakes in my stir fry with no issues. I think that different nightshades have different combos of chemicals, like solanine and capsaicin, also nicotine is a solanaceae chemical too. So some people may be sensitive to the different chemicals in the different nightshades.

It seems people do have different reactions. And as Gabby, said, sometimes it's in the amount you eat, too.
It's still best to cut them out completely during the initial elimination on AIP. After that, you can reintroduce one by one-that's the only way you'll figure out what you tolerate. You may be surprised to see a reaction to tomatoes after all.
