Since starting my journey back in July I have suffered off and on with chapped lips. Currently, they're the worst I've ever had in my life! I've never had a problem with chapped lips really and it doesn't matter what I put on them, they remain chapped and scaly. I think I'm getting enough healthy fats in my diet, here lately I've used everything from cocoa butter, shea butter, olive oil, coconut oil, emu oil...everything short of vaseline. Help!!

Are you getting enough liquid? I don't necessarily mean 2 litres a day (I can't...) but just a regular intake of water, also through enough vegetables and occasional fruit? I find that consuming (naturally) fatty foods like avocados, liver paste, two extra spoons of coconut oil a day and letting them penetrate the lips while eating helps a lot.

I drink between 72 and 96oz of water a day and I'm pretty sure I'm getting plenty of fatty foods. No matter what I put on them, it's not helping. I've never had this problem and I don't know what's causing it now. I don't lick my lips, so yea. I appreciate the advice and I'll see if it helps.

I used to get chapped lips horribly. Thinking about it though, I haven't had to use my lip balm much anymore? Not sure if it's how I'm eating or what? Regardless, I'm sorry you're finding no relief, I know that's such a horrible feeling! You listed a lot of what I'd recommend and even the ingredients in my DIY lip balm. Are you getting enough collagen/gelatin/bone broth? You could also try using tallow on your lips. Or make a balm with tallow in it.

Great ideas! Thank you Erin, I'll try that! I do eat bone broth and collagen/gelatin everyday. I'll have to get some tallow and give that a try!

khelsei1776, are you Paleo or AIP? Looking back at my days before Paleo/AIP, I think my lips blew up when I ate nightshades (burritos, etc.). So if you're eating them, be aware of that. And if you're not, be aware of hidden sources-just in case. But I'm with you, this stuff is still happening to me (on a smaller scale) even while I'm on AIP. It takes a few weeks to go away, but it always cycles back. I don't have a clue what causes it and I've also tried many of the things you've tried. Just wanted you to know you're not alone The only thing I've been thinking of trying is getting a humidifier since I live in a dry climate.

I've been doing Paleo since July and am going to start AIP after the first of the year. It's just been the last couple weeks...so I don't know what's going on.

It's all part of the "adventure" Do your best to nourish your body-make sure you get lots of water and sleep and try to de-stress the best you can. My doctor mentioned hormones can come into play with skin issues, as well. And definitely try tallow...sometimes skin issues heal better using animal fats than plant fats. Another thing to check out is Liz Wolfe's Skintervention Guide: purelyprimalskincare.com/. She talks about nourishing the skin inside and out.

Yes ma'am I'm chapped lip city lately. I've been AIP for 3 weeks now and it stared in the middle of week 1 just chapped with slices/openings in the corners of my lips very painful. Then by middle of week 2 and has progressed to peelings lips with blood. I drink lots of water the best I can afford close to 80 oz a day if not more. I'm slathering on shea butter and olive oil and nothing is working. I chalked it up to a healing crisis, it's unpleasant and annoying. Body is going through major changes. Don't even start me on the zits all over my face and even body. never had any of this. Always had soft lips and nice skin. People stranger would tell me how kissable and soft my lips look and how glowing my skin is. Not so anymore. I think this is just all the junk starting to release. I also started looking at my salt intake. Since I'm not using the spices and flavorings I used to before I may be using more salt to season without noticing. Maybe that is contributing to the dryness and parched nature of my lips. So maybe since salt intake maybe more it's not enough water after-all. I use pink Himalayan salt so I'm gonna back off a bit and see how things progress. HTH

If you don't want to use Vaseline, lanolin is the next most effective occlusive (meaning it physically traps moisture in your skin). It's got some naturally occurring AHA, so it can also work as a mild humectant and help exfoliate the surface of your lips to smooth them out while they recover. I really hope they feel better soon, chapped lips are so uncomfortable!

I have a love hate relationship with Vaseline I love nothing makes my skin feel better, softer and smoother then again it's petroleum so, lol I'm wonky like that. I sure will look into lanolin thank you

I just tried a new chapstick from www.tallobalm.net. They don't have it listed yet on their site but I bought some at a local market show. They said they will be uploading it soon and it's fantastic. It's tallow mixed with the right essential oils that heal chapped lips. I feel like it literally lasts all day... I bet if you write them, they'd get you one. It was $6 for the tube if I remember right.
