Hi guys, Happy to be in this community and hoping I can learn from everyone. My husband was recently diagnosed with crohns, fructose and lactose intolerance , overgrowth bacterica, and the valve between his small intestine and colon doesn't close. He just finished his first week of the aip and low fodmap diet but his symptoms are worse than before. He gets more abdominal pain and more frequent BMs (diaharrea) where before he had formed stools and less BMs. His weight is also down to 120 now - he lost 3 pounds this wk. Should we continue with the diet? I know it's supposed to get worse before it gets better but I am concerned with his weight but more so with his diaharrea and frequent BMs. Did anyone else go through the same issues? Thanks!

Hmm it's not really supposed to get worse...I guess if you're switching straight over from the Standard American Diet (SAD), it can be kind of rough. With such a limited diet (since he's doing low FODMAP, too), it could be that he's eating too much of some foods. I wonder if he should try regular AIP first and then go low-FODMAP once he's feeling stable and has the hang of it? It doesn't have to be all at once. Or maybe it does-it depends on the person and their health situation. One thing I want to add is that low-FODMAP is only meant to be used as a tool-for about 2 weeks. Then foods should be slowly added back in. Sarah shared that at her book signing yesterday and a number of people breathed a sigh of relief Also, check out Sarah's post on gaining & maintaining weight while on AIP: www.thepaleomom.com/2012/11/how-to-gain-or-maintain-weight-on-the-autoimmune-protocol.html. Hopefully, you can pick up some tips there. I hope he finds relief. I don't know whether he should continue or not...maybe he should talk to someone who could coach him through it all?
