Hello I have been suffering from alopecia areata of the beard for the past 2 years and have just begun the paleo autoimmune diet. I had a food sensitivity panel done about 6 months ago and have strong IgA and IgE reactions to both beef and lamb which I have been off of for quite a while. On the paleo diet obviously food options are limited and I am wondering if I would be remiss to reintroduce beef albeit infrequently in search of good sources of protein and calories or if it would be best to leave it alone because of the IgE and IgA test results, thoughts? Also on the flip side I did not react poorly to egg whites nor yolks, would these be allowable even though banned under the Paleo-Autoimmune diet guidelines? Any help and guidance would be most appreciated!

Stay off beef and lamb for the entire time you are on AIP because it seems to be a trigger for you. Try to increase your fish intake instead and other sources of meat like vension, chicken, and even pork. Don't forget that the meat portions need not be very big. Make your own chicken broth, too. Stay off everything that's on Sarah's list (http://www.thepaleomom.com/autoimmunity/the-autoimmune-protocol), so yes: stay off eggs, too. You can reintroduce them very soon after the program (yolks first): www.thepaleomom.com/2012/09/reintroducing-foods-after-following-the-autoimmune-protocol.html Be aware that your body will significantly change its attitude towards food, so your beef and lamb reactions might be just blown away in the end, while you might react to other fouds at the same time.

Maren- Thank you so much for the insightful reply, all and any advice is much appreciated. Do you think it is worth being retested in the coming months for food sensitivities to see if anything changes?

I'm not actually sure if those tests really work. I have read in the past that you would have to do a bunch of them as your body reacts differently at different times. So personally, I never did any tests (also for financial reasons). The safest is really to learn how your body works and which substances it reacts to. You can find out by reintroducing slowly (i.e. one by one) from the safe basis of the elimination diet. Good luck!

Maren gave fantastic answers! Definitely don't reintroduce anything until after you've tried strict AIP. There are plenty of protein sources out there. Then hopefully if you truly don't have issues with eggs, you can reintroduce them. I also agree with not testing. It's very possible that once you heal your gut, you won't have those sensitivities anymore. There's no need to re-test. Your reactions will tell you what you need to know Just pay attention to what your body tells you!
