Sarah mentioned removing black pepper initially. She made it sound like it was in a different category than the other food we are taking out on AIP. I have been AIP for over a month, following it very closely. I am using a LOT of salt to make up for the lack of pepper. I'm fine with continuing to leave out the other nightshades, or this, if I have to. I am far from symptom free though. But we THINK the symptoms may be due in part to a lot of painting and stain exposure. No clue really. How long should we avoid black pepper? Could I add it back and if nothing changes...I'm ok? I would think I'd know right away because I add it heavily to my foods.
Help! LOL!

I don't know if you've read The Paleo Approach and/or these posts on Sarah's site. I do know that reintroductions are discussed in detail in The Paleo Approach. Sarah has a post about reintroductions here: www.thepaleomom.com/2012/09/reintroducing-foods-after-following-the-autoimmune-protocol.htmlSpices on the AIP are discussed here: www.thepaleomom.com/2012/07/spices-on-autoimmune-protocol.htmlToday Sarah posted a review of an book by the blogger at Phoenix Helix all about reintroductions: www.thepaleomom.com/2014/10/e-book-review-reintroducing-foods-paleo-autoimmune-protocol-eileen-laird.htmlHopefully others will reply with a more detailed response.

Black pepper is not a nightshade, but actually a small, dried fruit. It's avoided on AIP because it contains a seed (white pepper is the seed of the fruit with the black skin removed). So if you're experimenting with reintroducing seeds but aren't yet at the reintroducing nightshades step, black pepper is probably safe to try. =) It actually aids nutrient absorption!

I added it back in last night. The only thing I noticed was what seemed like a hormonal sweep of emotions a couple hours later to a couple discouraging things that came up. I'll see if that keeps up. Wouldn't THAT be a strange reaction!!??

bethnc, definitely let us know how the pepper reintroduction goes! I also haven't had pepper since I started AIP (9 months ago)-and have been compensating with salt Not that that's a bad thing!

So far, so good. It actually doesn't taste as good as I remember.
