Does anyone else's young kids struggle with constipation? I feel so bad when my daughter does, it really gets painful for her every so often. I cannot give her any bananas anymore, and very limited kefir, otherwise no dairy. Any kind of processed bread (gf included) products seem to make it worse too. Prune juice daily and lots of water are necessities to prevent it. Any suggestions? Is there a favorite probiotic for kids among you all?

I don't know anything about toddlers, but have you tried green clay diluted in water with her? The taste is creamy (not yucky at all) and it is more powerful than Bentonite... My naturopath told me to always have it on hand for all kinds of things. Also, plantain chips work like a miracle for me, but as I said: I have NO experience with kids, just trying to think of sth simple and likely to be harmless.

My kids have the same issues at times. I've JUST decided to put them on Paleo diets with about 25% to 50% of their intake being raw. I am hoping that helps their digestion. What has helped my boys is to put a little mineral oil in their juices, and to water down their juices to help their systems flush out. When that doesn't help, I give them prune juice, but I make sure there are no added ingredients, and that it is organic. 100% pure prune juice usually helps the same day. Only if nothing else works, I will put a half dosage of Miralax in their drinks. I only use it in emergency times though because habitual use of a laxative will then cause the person to depend on laxatives in order to have bowel movements.
I have recently seen a foot stool that sits under the toilet that puts the person seated into a squatting position. This is supposed to aid in more productive BM's. There is a blurb about it in the Aug/Sept issue of Paleo Magazine. It's called The Squatty Potty. I"m sure any other small stool shorter than the seat will work just as well though.
I have no idea if I told you anything new, but I hope you have better luck soon.

Thanks for those ideas, ladies. I give her a probiotic upon waking, then a mixture of 100% organic prune juice (I totally agree with this!), Good Belly probiotic drink and water (1/3 each) then grapes or clementines or dried fruit and nuts for a snack before eggs for breakfast about two hours later. Usually this helps, as long as her other caregivers follow our normal diet, and she gets lots of water the rest of the day. It seems that there are reasons for exceptions to be made by others, and occasionally myself, and there will be in the future, I'm sure, with preschool not far away. Fortunately, the school she will be starting puts a great emphasis on organic and natural, but it's not Paleo, so we will have some talking to do. More than dairy, I feel like processed grain products trigger the problem, but sometimes it happens when her eating is on track. So confusing!
