Hi, my name is Ann and I am from Australia. I have been battling cancer for 6 years and have just had my 5th surgery. After my chemo and radio (5 years ago) I put on about 10kg (I was already about 10kg over my ideal weight). This means I am 20kg overweight. I have tried everything in the last few years - all the fads (Atkins, 5 meals a day, you name it) no luck. I started paleo and complete clean eating (nothing processed) and supplementing 2 tbspns coconut oil 3 weeks before my recent surgery to give myself the best chance of healing. I am now 3 weeks post surgery and my drs and nurses cannot believe how well I am healing. I had a large amount of skin, muscle and tissue removed from my arm and then a large flap of skin and muscle taken from my back to fill the hole. I then had a skin graft taken from my thigh to fill in the rest. I have a lot of spots to heal!!! My issue is that while I feel great and am healing well I am not losing any weight. This is very frustrating and confusing. Even during my hospital stay (2 weeks) where I ate very little nothing budged. I am trying to tell myself that my body is healing other issues first before the weight comes off but I am becoming very, very discouraged and disheartened. Can anybody shed some light? Thank you for reading

Ann, hang in there. Not everyone loses weight right away. The best part is your healing!! Also, you don't want to eat very little. You need to eat the right amount of food to support your body's energy. Are you eating when your hungry? They always say the biggest challenge for people is not eating enough. My advice: ·Eat when you hungry ·Stop eating when your are content ·Make sure you get healthy fats in each meal ·Double check all your foods you are eating to make sure they really are clean foods. No hidden sugar etc. · Watch the amount of nuts and fruit you eat. That can really hinder yourself. ·Lastly relax be grateful for your health, and the weight will eventually come off.

Thank you so much for that great advice. At times I definitely do not eat enough and then will snack on lots of nuts! I will hang in there as the benefits are obvious with the way I have healed (and amazed the doctors). My skin is good and considering my recent surgery, I have lots of energy so there are lots of benefits I just wish the weight would go - all in good time I guess. Thanks again, it helps to hear all that. A

Hi Ann, it's awesome that you are making your body's needs a high priority in spite of everything you're dealing with! Right now your body is dealing with a great amount of stress and when the body is stressed it typically doesn't want to lose weight. Try your best to focus on feeding your body foods that will help it heal and thrive. Then when you are well your body can start to focus on other, less dire things, like losing weight.

Thank you Mindy. I think it is times like this when we need to make our body our priority unfortunately I see so many unwell people who think that the opposite is true - I am going through so much, I will have that cake/chocolate/sugar, etc, etc. I can understand it but look on in dismay when their healing does not go to plan. I really am becoming discouraged, I understand the priority is healing and that's my main focus but I despair at ever shifting this weight. I consider it also a high priority as the type of cancer I have shows itself in lumps appearing on my body. The more fat there is the less obvious they are. I will keep going but wonder what I am doing wrong. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it. Cheers, Ann

Hello I'm Virginia, I'm in the AIP since August of this year. In the beginning I felt a big difference in the feeling of my belly, less tension, not pain, less swollen... I felt really good. Even I felt that I was losing some weight. Also I'm doing some exercise paleotraining: www.paleotraining.eu/en/ that I'm enjoying a lot. But my struggle is that I'm now in a point where is being very difficult to loose more weight. I'd love to loose some kilos, but I have the feeling I'm stack. I now AIP is not for loosing weight but I'm frustrated of trying so hard and no see results. Is there anybody can give me some advises? Thank you very much

I've read about sprint training to help reset your body's set weight point. Sarah has some great articles about it on her site, and if you're healthy enough, I highly suggest trying it. It's helped me whenever I'm stuck at a certain weight for more than a couple weeks. I hope this helps you both! www.thepaleomom.com/2012/04/attempting-to-lower-my-bodyweight-set.html

Eating sweet things are OK, if you can stop at just a little. I have berries or fruit, or if I really want chocolate then I'll have very dark bitter chocolate. I find that that a small amount is satisfying because it is so rich. I'd advise against more carbs if you're trying to lose weight.
Sometimes chocolate cravings can actually mean your body is craving magnesium or caffeine too. Try having that instead and see if the craving goes away.
Eating paleo doesn't necessarily equal weight loss. Calories still matter. Are you tracking your meals with a tool like mynetdiary or myfitnesspal? Could it be possible that you're over eating? Are your thyroid and sex hormones in check?

Thanks for the info paleoprincess I will check what you suggest. Answering your questions I think I'm not over eating. But probably I'm not eating suitably but I don't know. How can I check my thyroid and sex hormones? Going to the doctor and asking him for this checking?

How can I check my thyroid and sex hormones? Going to the doctor and asking him for this checking? Both can be done with a blood test. Sex hormones can also be tested by saliva. For thyroid ask for T3, T4, rT3 and TSH. Sex hormones ask for estrogens, progesterone, testosterone, FSH. If your doctor is unwilling (many are skeptical of hormone imbalances), find a naturopath, doctor that practices integrative or functional medicine or an FDN practitioner (http://functionaldiagnosticnutrition.com/practitioners/). Also, if you've haven't already, I'd suggest reading Gary Taubes' book "why we get fat and what to do about it". It is the most comprehensive and detailed book I've read on the effects of hormones on weight loss. Jade Teta also has lots of useful articles (http://www.metaboliceffect.com/blog/).

Ive been on AIP for 6 weeks now. The weight has fallen off slowly, but more in the last 2 weeks. I've lost almost 10 pounds, but within weeks my pants were looser, although the scale had barely moved much.
