FODMAPs

Alright, trying to do some research on this subject. I completely trust all of you to steer me in the right direction. I'm convinced that this is a path I need to take just because I do have a sensitive tummy. Since switching from low carb to paleo, I've been gassy and have bloated moments. I can't say I'm even 70% paleo (it's been about a month) because I'm still learning but it's very similar to what I was already doing...

FODMAPs

I had to avoid FODMAPs for a while last year. I used the MONASH university FODMAP app. The food list is ok and they have lots of extra info on FODMAPs in the app. Maybe you can google "MONASH university FODMAP" before you get the app and see what information you can get for free.

I used the monash app too. It's expensive but... The information is the most up to date, and all proceeds go back into their research program, not someone's beach house mortgage :-) it's awesome esp when you want to do specific fodmap reintroductions (a couple from each category, one category at a time). You may not be sensitive to all of the categories, you see. It takes 6-8 weeks to figure it all out. 2 weeks avoiding all. Then reintro a couple things a couple times (small amounts) over a day or two. Document results over next two weeks. Then try a different category. Small amounts but over threshold important - don't want to get top sick! And you already know onion so don't bother reintro that one until you've been AIP for a while and healing has taken place. They don't know why yet people can't digest them, just theories. According to Paleo approach book. So could be varying factors between individuals. One may be able to reintroduce after healing, one may not. I'm not reintroducing until I've done all my AIP reintroductions, as I have doubts about many of those, not going to complicate with FODMAPs. I've gotten used to not having them though. It's not so bad :-D in fact, my gut health and mental health and general well being has never been better!! Good luck!!

FODMAPs

I've been following AIP since the beginning of January but have hit a wall. I think I may be FODMAP sensitive because after eliminating all the AIP foods & seem to be eating way more fruit & FODMAP vegetables. I have kept a food diary since I began the AIP journey & it is hard to pinpoint the exact cause but I have to try something as my tummy is not happy. I am getting a little bit down about restricting even more food. I am struggling to also cut out FODMAPS & find enough to eat. I haven't bought the Monash Uni app yet but now I have read your posts I think I will. It may help me get through the inital elimination period. I was also thinking that if I go FODMAP free for a week or two & feel better then I can reintroduce some of the AIP foods just so I have enough variety. I struggle to keep weight on & can't afford to drop any more weight due to not having enough variety to eat. It does get a bit boring eating carrots & parsnip as my main hot veges.

If you are struggling with weight then please allow me to introduce you to my best friend, Taro. You can meet him in Asian grocery or fancy fruit/veg stores. Fresh or frozen but fresh tastes the best. The carb content is almost that of white rice (so I've read don't quote me!) and until taro came into my life I was struggling too. Taro is starch so glucose no (or little) fructose. It's awesome!! I steam heaps every couple days, and nuke or stir fry with fresh greens, add meat/fish, or heat up with bone broth for soup. Can't speak highly enough of it, if keeping weight on, or fatigue due to lack of carb options on AIP/fodmap getting you down. X

FODMAPs can be a culprit for a lot of people with digestive issues. It's sometimes worth it to do a FODMAP elimination diet for a few weeks then introduce them again individually. Also, some people just need to cut back on the amount of veggies in each meal, or cook (vs raw) veggies. FODMAPs also has to do with FODMAP load - basically the amount of FODMAPs in one meal.
