Since starting low carb almost a year ago one of my fantastic side affects is that I haven't been gassy which was always an issue with me. Over the last month or so I have been changing a lot of things in my diet trying to switch to paleo and I'll tell you what I have had such bad gas...I'm not happy about this at all! The only thing I can think that's been an every day food is coconut oil. I have been feeling not only gassy but bloated and just heavy throughout my whole body. I ate four times as much processed foods on low carb than I am now, tons of cheese, sweeteners (truvia only). I'm dairy free, sweetener free except a tiny amount of honey that's in my fat bombs, I cook everything I eat, grain free...
what gives?

Are you eating more of something "healthy"? What gives me horrible gas are nuts. Doesn't matter what kind and how good they are for other people my tummy doesn't like them at all. Do you keep a food journal? Maybe you could check back if one type of food is showing up frequently. Or try not using coconut oil for a week to see if it gets better.

Fodmaps, if you've dramatically increased the amount of veggies/fruit... Onion and garlic and mushrooms are fodmaps, for example.... And many nuts are too.

This is common when people suddenly increase the amount of fiber they're eating. Low carb is sort of notorious for depleting the healthy bacteria that live in your gut and help you digest plants. Backing off a bit and increasing fruits and veggies slowly might help. Probiotic foods can be really helpful, too. Not only do they help re-establish gut flora, they're easier to digest because the fermentation has already started breaking them down.

Nuts no, mushrooms no, onions yes, veg intake yes but I was already eating a lot of those,I cut cauliflower because it does cause problems for me. Been taking probiotics for over a month...I think I'll cut out onions. Start with that

[br So when journaling for paleo, what should I be keeping track of exactly? I mean like for low carb I tracked carbs counts per meal, w.w. is points or am I just to write down foods I have eaten and how much of that food? So I haven't had any raw onion today and am not gassy this evening....

Yes what foods, when, how much can be useful (maybe more for fine tuning, if it's a threshold thing like for low fodmap diet). And the symptoms can be up to 3-5 days after you eat the food!!

What she said also write down your "bowel situation", are you feeling good, gassy, constipated etc. Once you have a couple of weeks you can start comparing the days before you had gas to the days when it wasn't that bad or even normal.

Onions are high in FODMAPs especially when they're raw. If your problem doesn't go away you might want to look for other FODMAPs in you diet

I started on Paleo 1 mnth ago and the gas was dreadful after I ate Kale. I have stopped eating kale (although Putting it into a smoothie seems to be ok for me), and the gas problem has gone.
