You'll find that most of the time, blending is far better than juicing because it leaves you with all the fiber from whatever you're blending. As for brands, we have a Blendtec and it's fantastic. Expensive, but worth it since we use it so much.

It really depends on what you want to make! Blenders are much more versatile, and can even be used to make juice, but juicers will get more, well, juice, out of whatever you're putting into them.
Liquid food can be tricky, though, and definitely isn't for everyone. Many people tend to wind up taking in way more sugar than they mean to. I like green smoothies at home and the occasional bottle of fresh juice, but the nutrient-dense, vegetable-packed options pretty much taste like chewy liquid salad.

To my mind a blender is better = a jucier removes all the fibre and a lot of the good stuff from the fruit and veg and you end up with a veggie pulp (that contains all the fibre) that you dump and nothing more than vitamin enriched sugar water (the juice) that you drink.
But with a blender the whole veggie, fibre and all gets incorporated...

I prefer a blender for retaining all the fiber as well and more convenient for cleaning and everything. I will drink green juices or beet juice on occasion at the farmer's market, but I definitely choose more vegetable based (vs fruit) based juices.

If you're going to choose between the two, I also recommend a blender instead of a juicer. I have a Vitamix that I really like. For very nice high end blenders, Vitamix and Blentec are the most popular brands. Kitchenaid makes a good middle of the road blender. Costco carries all of these brands, and sometimes you can catch them on sale. Williams Sonoma has even been known to have good sales on them from time to time.
