Hi everyone!
My daughter was born with severe food sensitivities, GERD, and eventually abnormal eating behaviors. She's 5 months old now, and we have made the rounds to a myriad of pediatricians, specialists (including a pediatric allergist and gastroenterologist), a pediatric ND, and a chiropractor. Her doctors, while well meaning, have not been any help (with the exception of throwing meds at the problem), and I have pieced together the source of both her problems and my own health problems through my own exhaustive research.
During my quest, I have met 100's of other mothers via FB groups which focus on children's GERD, ASD, eating disorders, etc and consequently I started my own FB group called 'Autoimmune Disease and Leaky Gut in Children/Babies' (www.facebook.com/groups/LeakyGutInChildrenAndBabies/). Having suffered with autoimmune disease my entire life, and now watching it evolve in my daughter, it's important to realize that this disease manifests very differently in our babies and children and requires a different level of care. The things that typically take years or decades to develop in an adult, can take mere weeks or even days to occur in a child or baby. Furthermore, children and babies run the risk of irreversible neurological damage, as a result of these conditions and their symptoms and complications.
Currently, I have been able to resolve her appetite issues and she is eating well after treating her with a modest dose of L-Glutamine supplement. (Incidentally, all of the excessively-priced elemental formulas such as Neocate, Elecare, and PurAmino contain L-Glutamine, as well as higher doses of selenium. I believe that's why so many of our children seem to just 'do better' on those formulas than any others, and I found a published study which speculates the same thing.) Unfortunately the severity of my daughter's leaky gut has prompted her body to react to virtually any protein I give her, even the trace amounts found in pharmaceutical grade supplements. Currently, I'm trying to locate a research immunity expert (ideally a PhD), with whom I can consult to help me determine the reactivity potential of various foods/supplements.
