I'm glad to have a place to put my thoughts in one place.
I've been overweight, obese, all my life. I've had two large weight losses as an adult, once in my mid-twenties, once in my mid-thirties. Hoping this one (my mid-forties) is the final one, the one where I maintain. I actually maintained a 50 pound loss for several years from my thirties, but then that number started creeping up, up up. I'd lost more than the 50 pounds but settled at a stable weight about 20 pounds above my lowest.
This time my focus is pretty different. I have really clear motivations (my health, and being healthy and active for my 2 young kids). I don't have any timeline for losing the weight, but I do have a very long-term view for staying engaged in managing my weight. I have promised myself to actively manage my weight for at least 44 months. That was too overwhelming at first, so I began with a focus on 44 days. I had many short starts of a few days, a week or two. Last summer I made 40 days before I lost focus. And then in September I tried again, and 44 days came and went. And then another 44 days came and went. And I passed 100 days, more 44 day segments, recently I passed 200 days, and now 44 weeks is in sight. I've lost about 45 pounds in seven months, and I'm not where I want to be. I don't have a number in mind really, but I do have a size goal and basically my end target weight will be where I am living in a way that is comfortable and sustainable and the weight will naturally plateau. I'm guessing it's about 30 pounds from where I am now, but time will tell.
As for eating, I'm not a militant defender of the words or concept of "paleo". I've eaten primarily whole-foods, home-cooked food for about 15 years. In 2009 I read Gary Taubes Good Calories, Bad Calories and switched to low-carb whole foods (so basically Primal). I read widely in health and nutrition so I have been familiar with paleo for a while. I tried giving up dairy late last year for a few weeks and was intrigued to go further. I planned to go dairy free in March but ended up deciding to do full AIP instead.
I'm not trying to actively manage an autoimmune condition, however, and I was frustrated by the lack of weight loss, since I'm still very focused on that. I felt great on AIP though, I loved having so much more vegetable matter. As I was reading around, I came across The Wahls Protocol and decided that her "Wahls Paleo Plus" (WPP) level might be the good compromise for me - low carb, ketogenic but with all the veggies! So April 1 I transitioned, have begun AIP reintroductions and started to follow the many WPP rules (well, not all of them, but most). I'm keeping green beans and eggs out of reintroduction until May (not allowed on WPP).
