Well, I'm taking the dive and I'm going to wean off my anti-depressants! I was on 100mg of Zoloft. I broke the rest of my pills in half, about 2-3 weeks worth. That'll be 50mg a dose. Once those are gone, I'll get a prescription for 50mg and then I will break those in half. I'll take 25mg every day for 2 weeks, then every other day for a week or 2, then every other day, etc. This is under my doctors guidance.

I'm interested in this thread. I've unintentionally gone off cymbalta because I got so tired and brain foggy I kept forgetting to take it. I would only realise when I got butterflies flapping in my ears a few days later (suddenly stopping mucks up with inner ear). I still get that but rarely now. One day I realised of run out and it had been 3-4 days so I just went with that and stopped. Doc not impressed and I don't recommend as some people pass out or fall over. But it's done! Gluten is my mood enemy and I suspect nightshades too. Also, if I don't have enough glucose (starch). At least, what very short experience on 6 weeks AIP has taught me :-)

I started to wean off my antidepressants (30mg of citalopram) in Novermber/December last year to start AIP in January. Middle of March I went back on them because of horrible anxiety. My depression and anxiety predate my AI diseases but I wasn't really expecting to feel like that, I thought the diet would help eliminate those feelings. But I was a bit overmedicated with my thryoid meds, so it could have been that. I wonder why you want to get off them, do you think you don't need them or just want to get rid of excess meds? That was why I did it but now I@m concerned I can't manage without them. I've been on and off them since I was 25, I'm 39 now.

But now my body is dependent on them and I hate it. I don't think I need them and I deinitely don't want them. The first time I tried to come off, it was cold turkey! Bad idea. I was so mean. And then I went back on them and tried to wean myself off of them. I almost made it but a bad day with my toddlers set me off! I think I can do it this time. I'm in counseling, OA, and have a great support system.

Yeah, cold turkey is not good, I would try taking longer than you think you need rather than less. Make sure you get some time to relax, I have a 4 year old and there's no peace, so if you have people who will take your toddlers for awhile, make the most of it. Just some time to sit on a comfy sofa and watch tv or an interesting novel makes a world of difference

There is a history of autoimmune/immune/mental illness in my family. I'm the youngest at 37. My sister has had the worst of it all, with COPD now and 5-10 years. Her youngest daughter is 15. She needed AIP, the internet g

20 years ago ... Determined to see if I can do without meds. And see if I can manage as the side effects suck. However, if I knew I was at risk or my family was, I'd go back on in a heart beat!!

I successfully weaned myself off my anti-anxiety meds after doing it very slowly and changing to a nutrient dense diet. However, I was put on thyroid medications and that induced some serious anxiety. I had to go on a very low dose of thyroid medication to keep from experiencing anxiety. I also monitor my anxiety because I believe that as my thyroid adjusts to AIP I may need less medication and if the medication is too high then it will trigger the anxiety.

This is very interesting to me - and I can't wait until I feel better enough to do so too. I am very proud of all of you to be able to be so strong to take that challenge. I was on Zoloft for years - and with the combination of Hashimoto's and increased weight gain for years - My doctor finally changed me to Wellbutrin this past January, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! - but eventually I would like to be OFF all antidepressants.
Also Cymbalta gave me hives, tummy aches, and dry mouth.

Some resources to consider when you are trying to naturally balance your emotions would be books that look at neurotransmitter deficiencies. Deficiencies in neurotransmitters have been linked to a wide range of mental health issues and addictions. Dr. Daniel Amen has some books out that address this and so does Julia Ross (The Diet Cure).

It's pretty interesting. I first became aware of nutrition's impact on mental health and addictions 7 years ago when I took a class on the subject for my certification as an addictions counselor. If you're not making as much emotional progress as you'd like to see on just AIP then you may want to have your levels checked and look into supplements.

Julia Ross has another book dedicated entirely to mood disorders - The Mood Cure. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0142003646/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1398423528&sr=8-1Diet alone may not help entirely with mood issues coming off of meds, but the neurotransmitter-building supplements may do the trick! Now I just need to figure out how to get my two Lexapro-dependent high-functioning autistic kids to stick with a supplement regimen and see if we can wean them off of the Lexapro. It's hard when school and social functionality is so dependent on the meds :/

My Psych had me do the entire six hour neuro psychological testing to see if it is actually a mind thing or if my depression is directly related to my Hashimoto's. I have my final consultation in two weeks when I get the diagnosis. Funny thing is that since I started the "whole30" I'm not feeling too depressed, I sort of feel like the whole testing may. Have been unnecessary. But we'll see, and I'll post an update when I jet the results. I'm also going to bring my husband with me to the appointment for support, just in case..... :-)
