Hello ladies! You can call me "Viva" I am currently 40 weeks + 3 days. My little girl seems to be in no hurry to leave her nice little waterbed, so I'm home on maternity leave just waiting for her to show up. My husband and I have been mostly Paleo for over 2 years. Reading your posts, looks like my theory about being Paleo during pregnancy keeping all the "standard ailments" at bay is right! I never had any actual sickness either, just occasional nausea that ginger ale helped with, and saltines or plantain chips, too. I also never had heartburn; on the occasions when I did give in to a SAD pizza craving or when I ate too late before going to bed, I felt uncomfortable but nowhere near the suffering my other (non-Paleo) girlfriends complained about during their pregnancies. I feel terrific, and gained a healthy amount of weight. Only when I did too much commuting did I see a severe swelling of legs (and cankles!! ugh!), but since I work home from home and can have my feet up, I've gotten it down considerably. I have ankles again!
For background, I was diagnosed with PCOS by an RE after trying to get pregnant for about a year. I had suspected as much, and before that I did a cleanse based on this awesome book called WomanCode. She's not really Paleo, but it is a natural approach to addressing PCOS specifically, mostly so it doesn't get the way of TTC. I loved the cleanse, and with it I was able to give up coffee for good (I'd been drinking it for decades). I also downloaded the freebie that came with a Paleo offer, PCOS Unlocked, which also helped a lot, I really cleaned up my act food-wise after that. After going to the RE and confirming that PCOS was causing me to have 40 day cycles, on average, all it took was a quick look at when I actually was producing a follicle and giving us the 'green light' to keep trying . And then, baby!
I've kept up my 80/20 Paleo throughout pregnancy and I plan to keep it up especially since I plan to breastfeed exclusively (fingers and toes crossed that I get to do this successfully!!). I'm actually going to attempt to make Stacy's Lactation Cookies tomorrow, since I have time to make and freeze a batch. I go to midwives for my care and though I will be delivering in a hospital, they work with the midwives all the time so this will be as natural a delivery as I can possibly get without going down to the Farm in Tennessee . No one will force me to get pitocin or a c-section after a certain period of labor, which is so nice to hear. Ever since going Paleo, my husband and I have looked into more natural forms of living and midwives were a big part of that for me as woman, so I switched even before I was pregnant. They end every appt with hugs and know your name, you can't beat that!
Looking forward to being a Paleo mommy, and raising a little Grokette baby girl. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions about breastfeeding and even products to use with her, so I'll be checking in over my maternity leave. But first... birth!!
