Hi All, I'm tentatively looking into probiotics (not sure whether I want supplements or a whole food source). What do you use? Any particular brands you would recommend? I may try making something at home at some point, but I'm not brave enough to do that having never tasted it before. Any advice?

I also wanted to incorporate something into our food rotation. I dislike sauerkraut from the shop and my first attempt to make my own failed (it's still sitting on my countertop after 2 months, unopened... I don't dare to open it :\ ) 2 weeks ago I decided to try water kefir. So I got some kefir grains and got into making it. It is extremely easy!!! And if you don't like the taste, you can mask it with pretty much anything. I actually just drink it as it is, so does my 2 year old. I already see benefits from it, so for us it's a great source of some good bacteria. This site has tons of info on how to make it, but I would just say: don't overthink it. www.culturesforhealth.com/water-kefir-frequently-asked-questions-faq

Thanks for the link. I was hoping for brand names so I could try commercial stuff before making my own, but there aren't to many local people here, so I'm not really surprised. I may just go blind into the local health shop and see what they have?

There are so many strains of probiotics; what works for some may not work for others. The Paleo Mom has some recommendations on her site, one is Prescript Pro Assist. My husband likes RAW brand, which I can't tolerate at all. I like E3Live and Ultimate Flora Critical Colon Care, which has a nice range of anti-inflammatory bifidobacteria, particularly Infantis. I spent a lot of time researching probiotics for my own specific needs, so keep in mind that recommendations from others may not work for your unique microbiome.

You might try Amazon for the Ultimate Flora. They have a shelf-stable form that doesn't require refrigeration. I also just discovered a brand called Bio Kult that may be similar. I plan to put Bio Kult into my rotation.

Can I ask why you're only looking "tentatively"? Keeping your gut flora in balance is the single best thing you can do for your digestion and overall health. Prevention is better than cure I say. I take the ethical nutrients inner health plus (refrigerated) as I read that live bacteria is the only way to go. Its also a fairly potent one with a few different strains of bacteria. I think its a good "everyday" probitoic. There are stronger ones on the market (eg BioCeuticals) but I've only ever used those to treat dysbiosis (that was diagnosed by lab tests). I also take blackmores digestive bio balance. That has a different strain that isn't in IHP. As for foods, I LOVE kimchi. My local Asian supermarket sells it in various sizes. Its usually in the fridge. It's so cheap I wouldn't bother making it myself.

I just found an Australian Kombucha brand that has some is AIP compliant flavours, it is called good brew. goodbrew.com.au, don't think it would be stocked by NZ health food shops, but there may be a similar brand that is.
