I have been using this substitution for years. Baking powder contains cornstarch. However, if you use equal amounts of baking soda and cream of tartar to make up the amount you need, you will have baking powder without the cornstarch. So the recipe calls for 1 teaspoon of baking powder. Measure out 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar. Works well.

Can't wait to try this. My dad is allergic to corn. I make him some gluten free treats (he's not AIP) and I was wondering what I could use in place of baking powder!

also, if you don't have any cream of tartar, you can use the baking soda but add a tsp of lemon juice or ACV to it instead. All it needs is an acid to react with the baking soda.
