I was just curious if any of you guys had an MTHFR genetic test done for mood related issues?

I've considered doing the test but I haven't done any real research into it. I wasn't aware that it is capable of indicating genetic tendencies toward mental health issues.

I thought 23andme.com won't divulge genetic findings anymore. I had planned on doing it, but right before it was announced that they could only show your ancestry.

It looks like they still do DNA testing but they're not doing health related DNA testing anymore. This is what was on their site, "23andMe provides ancestry-related genetic reports and uninterpreted raw genetic data. We no longer offer our health-related genetic reports." I could be wrong but the health information may be in the uninterpreted raw data but you would have to find someone else to interpret it for you. It might be worth it to contact the company to find out.

I found this post by Jill Carnahan, a functional medical doctor, "You will STILL get all the same test results but the FDA did not want direct to consumer interpretation so 23and me does not do the interpretation online (unfortunately!) You can STILL download and determine SNPs you have and what that means for your health. Fortunately 23andMe will still allow you to download the same raw data so you can get all the results yourself!"

So, is there a place we can interpret our results? I just got the go ahead to do the MTHFR test from my insurance company (covered 80/20) and doctor, but I'm wondering if the 23andme might be a better way to go. I can get information on all my genetic data, instead of just one gene.

I believe that you have to look for a health care provider who is able to interpret them. I found an integrative medical doctor in my area who has experience interpreting the genetic data. You may have to do a little searching and call different doctor's offices to find someone. Is your doctor or insurance company able to refer you to someone that could interpret a full DNA report?

23andme still provides a raw data file with all the information. You can then upload that file to sites like promethease.com, geneticgenie.org etc...

Ben Lynch has a good presentation about MTHFR on YouTube and his MTHFR.net site.

Its a really good place to start for people with depression / anxiety related issues. I recently found out I had compound heterozygous MTHFR genes. Following the methyl folate / B12 / P5P B6 protocol was a game changer. I added a zinc supplement to level out copper levels. Proper gut health is also a must..

MindyK: My area is sorely lacking in regard to integrative/functional doctors. I've been harassing the integrative doctor I found to get the MTHFR, and I would also like to check for the Celiac gene. He finally said yes. I think he relented because we can't find a reason for my systematic inflammation. He's not my first choice for a doctor, but he's what I've got. I've done a lot of asking around and research, and he is IT in my area. However, what Humplik posted is helpful. I have a big paycheck coming up, and I'll use $99 for the 23andme test.

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk I just recently had this test completed and tested positive for C667T, not specifically because of mood related issues, but depression and anxiety are part of my symptoms.
