I have been AIP since January and my Hashimoto's has gone into remission, but my vitiligo has starting spreading after years of being stable. I'm currently researching this, and it looks like I might need to get tested for the MTHFR gene mutation. I have only just starting looking into this, but if my early findings are correct then red meat, fish, Kombucha and blueberries - all the lovely things that I rely on in my AIP diet - may not be suiting me! I would love to know if anyone else has any knowledge of this, and will update my findings when I have more knowledge.

I'm sorry but I'm coming with questions, not answers - at least not yet. I have vitiligo that's pretty much taken over head to toe over the past 14 years. (Also, have history of Graves' Disease.) I'm not familiar with MTHFR gene mutation or the foods you listed that may be problematic. Can you tell me more about these issues and/or a good place on the web to learn more? I'm just starting to incorporate more grass-fed, pastured red meats into my diet and just found your post. Sounds like my hopes for the benefits of incorporating red meat into my back-to-health plan will now have to be reconsidered. I'd really appreciate any info you could provide:)

P.S. When I've searched online for answers about Vitiligo treatment and consequences in the past the information I've found was not very helpful. Nutrition is the solution to health issues that makes the most sense to me and I haven't found information that relates to nutrition and vitiligo. I understand how important it is to get Vitamin D from spending time in sunshine but I'm told by dermatologist to avoid the sun due to increased skin cancer risk due to lack of melanin. I do still try to spend some time in sun later in day when it's not so intense. But, I'm wondering whether the lack of melanin means that my body doesn't get Vitamin D from sun exposure anyway. I don't trust safety of supplements (that's another story) but know I need Vitamin D. What's a person to do? Do you have info about this also or know where I can get it?

from my reading, I learned that vitiligo is probably caused by leaky gut, like other auto-immune issues. As for vitamin D, you can eat liver and fish, but taking a supplement of D3 should not be ruled out. I get some sunshine in the summer, I just dont let myself stay out too long. I have read that skin issues take a long time to clear up. But the paleo/gluten free/AIP diet seems to have a good effect: I have not noticed any new spots, and the current spots are "filling in" with pigment. Very slowly. I have been gluten free for several years, so it has taken a while to heal.
