Hi! My baby girl is about to turn 1 & we are still BFing when together, in the AM when she wakes up, at night before bed. She gets bottles of BM when I'm at work. Her ped will probably recommend transitioning to cows milk (the standard recommendation, right when babies turn 1)- we don't want to give her cows milk.... What have you all fine to keep your baby as Paelo as possible! Also- how fobyou make the transition to fade out out bottles- since she is going to be a big girl ?

Great question! My son is 8 months old and has a milk protein allergy. They haven't told me what I should go to but I imagine it will be to stay on formula (he is half formula fed) but I am not sure. I think if you were able to, I would stick with just breastfeeding as long as possible.

My boys were both sensitive to dairy and I never introduced cow's milk. Eventually they both started to eat fermented dairy (yogurt and cheese), but they have never had cow's milk. They currently use rice milk if they need something "milk like" for cereal, but coconut milk is a good paleo alternative (best is the kind you make yourself, and next best would be canned without any additives, such as guar gum, in BPA-free cans if you can find them). How about incorporating bone broth as a source of calcium? Vitamin D will be the other thing that the ped is concerned about, so consider whether your LO is getting enough of that.
Have you tried using a cup with a straw? Helps to meet the need to suck (which doesn't disappear until age 3 or so), but does not interfere with breastfeeding, since biting or clamping on the straw means nothing comes out!! Also practice with a regular cup at meal times and toothbrushing, or whenever you can handle a little spillage :-)

My children are so sensitive to foods (autoimmune) my youngest is still getting breast milk at 3. WHO recommend getting breast milk till the age of at least 2. I would use a big girl cup and then use it on cereal too if your expressing. There is no nutritional benefits from switching milk that you can't get through a good diet as we know. My daughter picked her own cup and was so excited to use! HTH

The main reason milk is recommended (in my understanding) is because young children need a lot of dietary fat and (good) cholesterol for brain development. Human milk is obviously the ideal way to get those things, but many times extended BFing is either not possible or not enjoyable. We have relied on Paleo foods that provide those same things. My third child (now 3) is our Paleo baby, and she has had very little milk in her lifetime. Lots of avocado, eggs, coconut butter, etc. She is by far our healthiest (strongest immune system) child, and most adventurous eater. Baby #4 (just 7 weeks) will be a pretty strictly Paleo kid now that we know so much about good food choices.

Thanks to all.. darcie- what age did you intro yogurt I make bone broth... How would my LO drink it? We use a straw cup for water at meals & throughout the day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Gosh lara, I'm trying to think - I think for both kids I gave them yogurt somewhere between 12-18 months. But they were on and off dairy here and there as I tried to figure out various food sensitivities. Yep, just give the bone broth in a straw cup. My super picky 8 year old turns his nose up at almost everything but he will drink broth! If your daughter doesn't like it, try flavoring the broth with carrots and celery, if you don't already do that. And add a little salt :-)

I've been speaking to a dietician at Sick Kids in Toronto to figure out what I want to do when I transition my almost 14mo from breastfeeding. Her comments was to make sure there is adequate calcium, vitamin D, and healthy fats. She said the only way to know if it's working is that my LO continues to gain weight.

Have you decided what you're going to do? My little one is 9 months, and I was never able to breastfeed, if I was able to breastfeed I'd be doing baby lead weaning, but I've been exclusively pumping and I'm starting to go slightly crazy because of low supply I have to pump every two hours to make enough for her to drink, and I can't imagine doing this past a year. Anyway I've been debating what to do when she turns one, goats milk, or bone broth but I'm not sure if it's enough for her, so I might make the Weston price formula. My daughter may or may not have a milk allergy. My Dr. Is in Scarborough and is completely supportive and is pretty much paleo, but won't really give a recommendation, do you find the dietician helpful? Is she supportive?
