Everyday I wake up swollen. Puffy face, hands, feet. It diminishes fairly quickly, but some days takes long than others. This has been a constant for years. I thought it might be one thing that improved with dietary changes, but so far has not. I'd expect it more from high sodium (fast food, pizza, etc.) dinners the night before, but those have been non-existent for nearly two months. I did absolutely zero salt for three weeks, not added to food while cooking, etc. No change.
My blood pressure is low, that is not a concern. I'm just wondering if there is another cause I'm not thinking of? And anything I could try to change it?

I believe I have huge thyroid issues. But all tests say "normal". At one point I had an u/s done and had goiters on my thyroid. I was treated then, but as soon as blood work came back normal twice, she quit treating me. Another u/s was never done.
I'm always "normal". All tests indicate nothing is wrong with me, except a vitamin D deficiency. I have talked to my dr about it, but since it diminishes and nothing else appears at fault, it just remains.

I drink a lot of water. I was drinking approx. 100 ounces per day, but have cut that back to about 50. That is all I drink.

Interesting, but frustrating for you It's great that you did your own salt experiment-that's one thing you can rule out! Have you been to see a different doctor for a second opinion? Could you see a functional medicine doctor? Check out Primal Docs to see if there are any in your area. At least it might be nice to find someone who will listen to how you feel and what your symptoms are instead of just what your numbers say.

If you had goiters in the past I assume you took thyroid meds to shrink them. They shrunk, your numbers stabilized and the doc took you off meds. Do you have other low or high thyroid symptoms? thyroid.about.com/cs/basics_starthere/a/10signs_2.htm

Yes. I have lots of symptoms. She won't treat symptoms. Says it could be age, this, that, etc.
I live in a limited area, even though I'm 60 miles out of Chicago. Locally our doctors leave a lot to be desired. I work in health care and see a lot of issues. It is really, really hard to make frequent trips to Chicago.

I suspect this will be rather unhelpful, so I'm sorry in advance, but my mom and I both used to have this happen, too. We're also both prone to exercise-induced swelling, and both have low blood pressure (I'm not sure if you meant yours is clinically on the low side, or low as in "not too high", but ours is clinically low).
Nutrient-dense, low-carb-ish paleo without restrictions on salt + limited alcohol + lots of walking and regular yoga (my mom is better at sticking to the yoga than I am) and we've both seen the swelling gradually improve. I can't tell you which change helped, especially since it reduced gradually over about six months, but it's helped both of us.

daybreak...I do functional medicine and nutrition coaching over phone and Skype for distance clients. Sounds like you need more comprehensive testing than the basic screening labs that are normally done. A Metametrix test kit can be mailed to you for specimen collection at home. jamiekoonce.comSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Locally our doctors leave a lot to be desired. I work in health care and see a lot of issues. It is really, really hard to make frequent trips to Chicago. Hi Daybreak! I know it can be hard to make trips to the city to get treated. I travel 60 miles one way to see my FNP (Family Nurse Practitioner). But, it was the only way for me to get treated appropriately. See, doctors are taught that TSH is the do all and end all of testing for the thyroid. WRONG. TSH can be "normal" and you still suffer. So, you need a doctor who will go much deeper. My FNP ordered 19 blood tests in order to have a complete and thorough idea of what was going on with me biochemically. Turns out, I'm thyroid resistant! Sure, my blood has correct levels of T3 and T4 but my cells aren't taking in the active hormone...it's just floating along in the bloodstream doing me zero good. That was the key! That and a hormone (saliva) test and food sensitivities testing. I say all that to say this: you need a better doctor! And, if that means trips to the big city, then so be it. Once you are diagnosed, you won't have to go but once or twice a year....but you have to get diagnosed and on appropriate (read: effective) treatment!

What traditionally are the effective treatments for the excessive inflammation and swelling due to thyroid disfunction? Discouraged because after $400 fictional med visit, my script was to continue on Paleo and add licorice root. No improvements thus far.

Hi! I have the same issues with swelling. In the morning I can be so swollen that I cannot hold a cup. Some days it's not so bad other days it's terrible. I was diagnosed with Hashimotos. My thyroid function tests are always normal and I have a very large goiter. I am also vitamin D deficient. My doctor doesn't find it necessary to treat me so I feel stuck with these constant symptoms. I also have an array of other symptoms that don't coincide with Hashimotos. I have an appointment with an AI dr. Who comes highly recommended so hopefully I can get some answers. I have been Paleo for a little over 2 months now and have felt so much better until I added e
